Insect Lab

Project design

In 2022, I began a yearly tradition in my 3D Design course inspired by my interest in guerrilla art and site-specific installation. Each year centers around a new theme that encourages students to engage creatively with their surrounding environment. In 2024, the theme focused on insects native to Northeast Ohio.

To support the project, I collaborated with a biology professor to access the university’s insect collection and lab facilities. Students studied specimens firsthand, selected an insect of interest, and researched its behavior, habitat, and visual characteristics before beginning the planning and construction of larger-than-life sculptures.

The sculptures were created primarily from recycled and repurposed materials—either provided in class or independently sourced by students—encouraging inventive problem-solving alongside environmentally conscious making practices.

The finished works were temporarily installed throughout the Baldwin Wallace University campus, creating unexpected encounters between viewers, sculpture, and the surrounding landscape. Here are a few examples from the project.

Goals of the Project

  • Surprise and delight the campus community

  • Create a temporary sculpture installation outside

  • Respond thoughtfully to a specific site or environment

  • Transform repurposed materials into something unexpected

Requirements

  • Use primarily repurposed or recycled materials

  • Use weather-resistant / waterproof materials when necessary

  • Install work without damaging campus property

  • Do not block pathways or interfere with the work of the grounds crew

  • Ensure the sculpture is stable and safe in an outdoor environment

  • The installation should be removable without leaving a trace
